Setting Up Custom Reminders with iCal
Once you've subscribed to your ASM schedule with iCal, you can take it a step further and have your calendar remind you before each game, assignment, or availability deadline.
This guide shows you how to set up custom reminders on Apple, Google, and Outlook.
You need to already have your ASM iCal feed set up. If you haven't done that yet, follow the Setting Up iCal Sync guide first, then come back here.
Your ASM calendar is a subscribed (read-only) calendar. That means you can't edit individual events or add a reminder to a single game the way you would for an event you created yourself.
Instead, you set a default reminder for the whole calendar — for example, "alert me 2 hours before every event." That reminder then applies automatically to every game and deadline in your ASM feed.
The steps differ slightly per platform, so choose yours below.
On Apple devices, subscribed calendars use your Default Alert Times. The catch: the alert is applied when you subscribe, so the cleanest approach is to set your default first, then re-subscribe.
- Open the Settings app
- Scroll to Apps → Calendar (on older iOS, Settings → Calendar)
- Tap Default Alert Times
- Tap Events and choose when you want to be alerted (e.g., 2 hours before)
- If your ASM calendar is already subscribed, remove it and re-add it (see the sync guide) so it picks up the new default
- Make sure the subscription's Remove Alerts option is turned off (Settings → Calendar → Accounts → your ASM subscription)
- Open the Calendar app
- Right-click (or Control-click) your ASM Schedule calendar in the sidebar → Get Info
- Set a default alert (e.g., "2 hours before") and click OK
Tip: You can also set global defaults under Calendar → Settings → Alerts, then choose your ASM account.
Google lets you set reminders that apply to your entire subscribed ASM calendar. This must be done on the web — the mobile app doesn't expose these settings.
- On a computer, open Google Calendar
- In the left sidebar, hover over your ASM Schedule calendar (under "Other calendars") and click the ⋮ (three dots) → Settings
- Scroll to the Other notifications / event notifications section
- Click Add notification and choose your lead time (e.g., 2 hours before)
- The setting saves automatically and applies to all events in that calendar
Your reminders will then sync to all your devices, including your Android phone.
Note: You can't change reminders on individual events in a subscribed calendar — but the calendar-wide notification above covers every ASM game and deadline.
- Open Outlook Calendar
- Click the gear icon (Settings) → Calendar → Events and invitations
- Under Events you create / default reminder, set your preferred reminder time (e.g., 2 hours before)
- Save — this default applies to your calendar events, including your subscribed ASM feed
- Open Outlook and go to File → Options → Calendar
- Under Calendar options, make sure Default reminders is checked and set your preferred time
- Click OK
Note: The Outlook mobile app doesn't let you set default reminders, but it respects the defaults you set on the web or desktop.
Your ASM iCal feed already includes availability reminders as events — upcoming deadlines to submit your availability. The custom reminders in this guide add a notification (an alert that pops up) ahead of those events and your games, so you get a heads-up before each one.
- On Apple, make sure you set the Default Alert Time before subscribing — existing subscriptions keep their original (often "None") alert. Re-subscribe to apply the new default.
- Check that the calendar's alerts aren't being suppressed (Apple's Remove Alerts toggle off; notifications enabled for your Calendar app).
- On Google, confirm you added the notification on the web, on the ASM calendar specifically (not your primary calendar).
- This is almost always a timezone mismatch. ASM events use the timezone set in your ASM profile — make sure it matches your actual location.
- Check your calendar app's timezone settings as well.
- Lower the number of default alerts (e.g., keep just one "2 hours before" instead of multiple).
- On Apple, you may have a global default and a per-calendar default stacking — set the alert in just one place.
